Architecture for the performing arts

we recommend

This month ...

Tech. Theatre Arts Grad. Exhibition ... Guildhall School of Music & Drama, June
Exhibiting for the first time in the studio theatre and foyers of the Arts Team-designed Milton Court ... the work of 32 graduates from the Design Realisation, Stage & Costume Management and Theatre Technology courses — showing examples of work from 15 publically-performed dramas and operas, plus a range of other projects and events. Very impressive, and a great demonstration of what's possible with the new facilities.

The Way West ... Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Chicago ... directed by Amy Morton
Mona Mansour's new play contrasts the optimism of initial Western expansion in the US with today's struggling California middle class, illustrating a small, specific and telling American nightmare — the inability to pay for your pizza. The atmosphere is lightened with the inclusion of songs that echo the key character's obsession with the pioneer spirit and the settlers who came west in their wagon trains.

Parks + recreation
Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park ... Stratford London
Newly opened to the public, Olympic Park is a brilliant place for Londoners and visitors. Apart from invoking memories of London 2012, it gives London a tangible asset — a handsomely sculpted, landscaped urban park with curious secretive places to explore whatever your age. London's response to New York's High Line.

Theatre Buildings - A Design Guide ... ed. Judith Strong, ABTT
Will be a standard reference for anyone building, refurbishing or creating a performance space. Best of all, Arts Team's own Barry Pritchard (Front of House) and Julian Middleton (Auditorium Design) are section editors. We are pleased as punch that their expertise is recognised internationally. Highly recommended.
