The Crucible was described at the time of its opening as "the most exciting theatre to open in this country since the war". It has a steeply-raked semi-circular auditorium and an open plan stage.
The stage is at the heart of the new building, beneath the point of its shallow pyramid roof. From here the octagonal geometry of the rest is set out, placing the theatre's facilities radially around the auditorium.
The project included the design of foyers, a bar, a studio theatre and all backstage facilities, workshops and plant.
