The Queen's and Gielgud Theatres occupy a commanding position in Shaftesbury Avenue. As part of a project designed to reinvigorate London's theatreland, the Arts Team are refurbishing and extending the complex, which will include the new Sondheim Theatre the West End's first new performance venue in 30 years.
The building was damaged in a WWII bombing raid and lost its corner tower. This will now be reinstated using Portland stone in order to unify the façade. The internal space this will create provides an exciting opportunity for a grand internal public square that leads up to the enlarged foyers and bars and on to the new foyer for the Sondheim, which will overlook adjacent gardens.
The overall seating capacity of the three theatres on the site will be greater than the number on offer at the National Theatre.
